Remodeling The Heart Of The Home

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

The kitchen, often referred to as the “heart of the home,” is one of our favorite spaces to remodel!  We recently had the opportunity to renovate the kitchen and main living area of a Chanhassen home.  The homeowners – a family of four – approached Sass Construction with the goals of brightening their kitchen and creating a more open floor plan, ideal for entertaining.

To get their remodel underway, we began by replacing their original, flat panel oak cabinets with new custom-made enamel units.  Laminate countertops were replaced with granite upgrades and a new center island was added to afford the family more workspace.  To create the open floor plan that our clients craved, we removed a wall that had previously divided the kitchen and dining room and carried our remodel and renovation into the family room!

To give the family’s gathering space an updated look, we removed the existing masonry from the face of the fireplace.  We then framed the walls to insert a gas fireplace with a stone wall and complementing mantle.  Finally, we created a recessed area above the mantle that would allow the television to lay flush with the new wall.  To give the room a finished look, we removed the existing popcorn textured ceiling and installed an updated, knock-down ceiling in its place.

The end result was a fabulously updated and functional kitchen and a flexible floor plan divided only by well-placed furniture!

Give Your Home a Quick Check-Up This New Year

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

Helping you keep your home in the best condition possible is very important to us.

Taking the time to check and fix any items that need repair now, could save you headaches and money in the future – so here are some tips on what to check your home for:

· Test your smoke/carbon monoxide detectors and check that they have batteries

· Check your heat exchanger in your furnace for leaks (in the winter months)

· Check and drain your hot water heater once a year

· Make sure your exterior weather stripping on windows and doors are correct to stop air leakage

· Check and maintain your furnace (replacing filters will improve the air quality inside of your house and cleaning the humidifier makes it run more efficient)

· Check out the health of your home by looking at your attic insulation and ventilation

· Check the condition of your windows – maybe it’s time to get a price on higher efficient clad windows, then you will never have to paint again and will save on heating & cooling costs at the same time

· Check the condition of your exterior siding – maybe it’s time for a new exterior paint job or even better, a new maintenance free exterior

We will share another list with you as we get closer to spring too, which will include additional outside items that need to be checked.

As always, if you have any questions or need our help with a project please give us a call.

Kitchen Remodel

The kitchen can be a challenging space. Often thought of as the “heart of the home,” kitchens have the unique distinction of needing to be simultaneously, utilitarian work areas and welcoming gathering places.  To get inspired to create a kitchen that best reflects your family’s style, take at look at this list of some of our favorite kitchen trends going into 2012.

Juxtaposition: Combining seemingly contrasting styles is an ongoing trend that we suspect will continue to be popular in 2012.  For example, pair modern painted white lacquer cabinets with black granite countertops or rustic hardwood floors.  The juxtaposition of light and dark, modern and traditional will create an instantly classic space that can easily survive style changes and ever evolving trends.

Furniture-Style Detailing: Fancy fixtures, such as decorative brackets or the more intricate hardware that you might find on armoires or other furniture can add a grand twist when applied to the kitchen.  On your base cabinets, try applying furniture-style feet to your toe-kicks to create the look of the currently popular unfitted cabinets.

Colorful Countertops: A pop of color can help to transform a space and what better place to put it than in your kitchen counters?  Showy surfaces and bright bold colors are becoming increasingly popular today.  Not quite ready for a bold blue tile counter?  More conventional surfaces such as quartz can provide a subtler color injection when the hue is bold and unexpected.
