Project Feature: Bathroom Remodel | Excelsior, MN

Tuesday, November 19th, 2013

When the downstairs bathtub in an 1800’s Excelsior home started leaking, the homeowner knew something had to be done. And what better time to redo a bathroom than when removing an old cast iron tub!?

Sass Construction successfully removed the leaky tub – checking all of the pipes, and installing a new tub and surround. Having conquered the biggest problem, Sass worked with the owner to achieve the retro yet casual design she was looking for, featuring:

  • Crisp-retro sconce lighting
  • Dark grout for visual effect (and to reduce visibility of future stains!)
  • .75” octagon tiles for the floor
  • 1 x 6” wainscoting – followed through the tub area
  • Brand new Kohler fixtures in simple, clean white!

The all-new bathroom is a treat to see! Check out the pictures from the completed project below.

Our Favorite Thanksgiving Foods

Thursday, November 14th, 2013

It is always fun when Thanksgiving comes along, giving us the opportunity to express our gratitude. To all those with whom we’ve worked this past year: thank you for your friendship and amazing support.

Of course, the office is also abuzz with plans for Thanksgiving dinner. We’re looking forward to eating those foods that only come around this time of year! Here are some of our favorites…

Loves the yams – more specifically the yummy-sugar-coated-with-walnuts kind!

Loves all the food during Thanksgiving, but mostly the turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy.

She’s all about her mom’s old recipe for gravy – it goes good with everything!

Her favorite: the garlic mashed potatoes. Yum!

Loves Houlihan’s Baked Potato Soup (she said if you haven’t tried this you don’t know what you are missing), along with the sweet and salty Strawberry Pretzel Dessert…a family favorite year round.

And for fun, check out Barb’s Strawberry Pretzel Dessert recipe below! It may not be traditional Thanksgiving fare but it is definitely a delicious addition to any holiday get-together.

1 ½ cups crushed pretzels (pretzel sticks work well for crushing)

½ c. sugar

½ c. melted butter (or margarine)

Mix pretzels, sugar and butter. Press into 9×13 pan. Bake 5 min at 350 degrees. Cool.

8 oz. softened cream cheese

1 medium size container of cool whip + more for serving

2 small packages strawberry jello

2 cups hot water

2 -10oz. packages frozen strawberries with juice

Blend softened cream cheese and 1 medium size container of cool whip. Spread over cooled crust.

Dissolve strawberry jello in hot water. Add frozen strawberries (thawed, include juice). When jello begins to set, pour over cream cheese layer. Set until firm.

Cut into squares. Top with cool whip.

Material Selection for Your Remodeling Project | Remodel Planning Twin Cities MN

Thursday, November 7th, 2013

Selecting materials for your remodel is a big part of the project, Planning for Your Remodeland one that falls more heavily on you as the homeowner.  Here are some great guidelines to make the product selection process go smoothly and ensure you get the materials that are a good fit for your home, project timeline, and remodel budget.

1.  Before the remodel process has even begun, it’s best to start with a full evaluation of your space and what functioning items you need.  Jot down some of your ideas and main goals on a sheet of paper and bring it in as we sit down to discuss your project.  Bringing in photos or creating a profile of ideas on a site like houzz is also a big help.  Together we’ll develop a room layout, timeline, project goals, and ultimately turn your ideas into the reality of a beautiful new space!

2.  Once a project plan has been completed, we’ll walk you through the main items your project will need and provide advice on locating the pieces you have to locate.  List in hand, you’re ready to start making final decisions!

3.  Now it’s time to shop!  It’s important to make all of your selections as early as possible.  Your budgeted remodel allowance can quickly go wrong if you decided to choose materials that are outside of the original plan (say stone tile vs. porcelain tile) so we need a solid understanding of which products and materials you want to use to help define and stick to a budget.

As an example, here’s a list of items you may need to search for with a typical bathroom remodel:

  • Cabinets
  • Countertops
  • Flooring
  • Fixtures
  • Lighting
  • Wall Tile

This is a basic list — your project may include a few more items depending on the space you’re remodeling and your goals.  We’ll also walk you through the order and priority level in finding certain materials.  For instance in a kitchen remodel we recommend you start with the cabinets, countertop, and flooring choices before moving on to other decisions.

By creating goals, deadlines, and a definitive process for you, we help take the stress out of selecting materials for your remodel.  It’s our goal to make sure you’re getting everything you want out of your remodeling project without any surprises.  Except for good ones of course — like how much you fall in love with your new space once the remodel is complete!
